Ready for a little DOCOMOMO history? The international committee was formed by Hubert-Jan Henket and Wessel de Jonge in The Netherlands in 1988. Earlier this month the two were awarded the World Monuments Fund/Knoll 2010 Modernism Prize for the restoration of Zonnestraal Sanatorium in Hilversum, The Netherlands-the very project that helped launch global efforts to preserve modern architecture at risk. ... As the nomination documents assert, "Connecticut's unique contribution to the development of mid-20th century Modern residential architecture was nearly unparalleded in scope and impact." More than 300 architect-designed mid-20th-century Modern houses have been identified as currently standing in the state and new houses are identified regularly. Those who have spent much time exploring the architecture of New Canaan know that this quiet town is home to as many as 90 depending on how you define "Modern." In September 12 New Canaan houses were added to the National Register of Historic Places and six to the Connecticut State Register.... MORE

Twenty four DOCOMOMO members and friends attended a special program at Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center on a glorious fall afternoon, Sunday September 19. Manitoga is the home, studio and landscape that the influential industrial designer Russel Wright created on the site of a former granite quarry in Garrison, NY between 1942 and 1976. ... MORE

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission on October 19 voted unanimously, or nearly so, to deny the Guggenheim Museum's application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for its proposal to construct a food service kiosk at the entrance to the Museum.... MORE

Last year we introduced 80 people to I.M. Pei’s Kips Bay Plaza during Open House NY/DOCOMOMO US Tour Day and considered our efforts successful. This year’s event, held Saturday October 9, topped that and then some. A total of 189 people stopped in for a look at the lobbies, community room and private garden of Pei’s seminal housing complex. ... MORE
