On November 8, the first round of public hearings addressing NYU’s proposed new tower on the landmarked University Village/Silver Towers site began with the Landmarks and Institutions Committees of Community Board 2. Ten days later NYU announced it was withdrawing plans for the 38-story tower and would not seek Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) approval. The great variety of topics and formats of books offered this season, by academic and trade publishers alike, bodes well for research on the Modern Movement. Monographical treatments bring into view lesser-known architects (Rakatansky, Otto, Urban, Lapidus) and deepen our knowledge of central figures (Corbusier, Foster, Kahn, Perriand, Sterling). The geographic focus continues to expand (into colonial and third world countries); under-documented aspects of modern design are explored (the illumination of buildings); and forces affecting the movement’s reception (a store, the press, its own mythology) are thoughtfully examined. ... At the end of October, passersby were horrified at the removal of Harry Bertoia’s sculptural wall and mobile from the former Manufacturers Hanover Trust building at 510 Fifth Avenue, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1954. The building is a New York City Landmark, however the interior, a significant visible space through the transparent façade, has never been designated.... MORE

On Tuesday November 16, one of the few buildings in New York City designed by Paul Rudolph was designated a NYC landmark. Beginning in 1977, Rudolph renovated and expanded 23 Beekman Place in Manhattan—a townhouse built in the late 1860s—creating a four-story penthouse for himself with rental units below.... MORE
