DOCOMOMO Philadelphia Chapter partners with Philadelphia University
March 25, 2011
As part of its mission to create awareness and appreciation of mid-century Modern buildings, the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of DOCOMOMO US recently provided a tour of a 1950 home designed by Norman Rice to first year architecture students at Philadelphia University. The home received an award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia in 2010 for its authentic restoration and has been accepted as a filming location for 1950s era movies by the Greater Philadelphia Film Office.
Chapter members Janet Grace and Carl M. Dress, AIA, led the tour that included a discussion of materials and construction methods used in the 1950s. A biography of the architect and a definition of the International style were addressed. The students are studying significant homes of different architectural periods and will be designing a home with an adjacent visitor’s center as a semester project.
