Demolition of E.D. Stone’s PS 199 averted

June 23, 2013

In April we wrote about the New York City Board of Education’s redevelopment plans for two school sites on the Upper West Side, one of which is the renegade Modernist Edward Durell Stone’s P.S. 199 at 270 West 70th Street. The Board was seeking a developer to purchase the site, demolish the existing building and build a mixed-use high-rise tower with a new school facility in its base. Local residents and advocacy groups, including the Upper West Side preservation advocacy organization Landmark West!, mounted a strong campaign against these plans, arguing for public input on the proposal. It appears that those efforts have paid off. On June 14, the City announced that they were dropping these plans.
