Iconic Stoller print could be yours
April 25, 2014
We are pleased to announce that a work by the pre-eminent American architectural photographer Ezra Stoller, whose images helped to define the Modern era, will be offered by silent auction on May 13 at A Modern Affair. The framed gallery-quality print depicts one of Stoller’s best known architectural portraits: a view of the interior of Alvar Aalto’s Finnish Pavilion for the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair.
Aalto’s signature wood finishes and dramatically tiered curving forms are highlighted in this depiction of what was ultimately one of the most distinctive exhibitions of the Fair. Stoller later reflected that he received the important assignment to photograph the space early in his career from the publisher/editor of Architectural Forum, and that the project led to a long friendship with Aalto as well as a broadening of his view of Modern design. In his own words, “As a piece of architecture it loosened the doctrinaire hold that Bauhaus design had on me.”
The print has been generously donated by his daughter, Erica Stoller of Esto.
