A Modern Affair exceeds all expectations!
May 27, 2014
Our first major gala, A Modern Affair, took place May 13th on what turned out to be a fine spring evening. The event celebrated 50 years of Alvar Aalto’s Edgar J. Kaufmann Conference Center, which is normally closed to the public, and brought together over 150 friends of the New York/Tri-State chapter for several fun-filled hours of cocktails and conversation.
As the sun set over the East River and the United Nations complex, guests mingled on the balcony and enjoyed Finnish-themed appetizers. A highlight of the evening was an engaging presentation by scholar Michael Trencher on Aalto, his work and specifically the Kaufmann Conference Center. (We all learned that “Aalto” means wave!) Many went home with mid-century-themed raffle treats, generously donated by sponsors, from architectural monographs to Aalto-designed “Savoy” vases. Our silent auction winner landed a stunning Ezra Stoller print of Aalto’s Baker Dormitory at MIT.
In short, it was a perfect evening. We want to extend a very warm thank you to all who attended and to our many wonderful sponsors. Your support will enable DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State to continue the educational and advocacy work that we all value, and to generate increased awareness of buildings and sites of the Modern movement in our region. We look forward to seeing you at events throughout the year.
