Highlights from the DOCOMOMO US Symposium

June 20, 2015

The DOCOMOMO US National Symposium 2015, held during the first week of June, introduced an enthusiastic audience of nearly 200 to the Modern heritage of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The panel sessions focused on a range of topics, from Living In Modernism to Social Media and Advocacy to Concrete and Schokbeton. Tours complemented panel topics, and took Symposium participants to see fascinating residential and institutional works by architect Ralph Rapson; urban landscapes; and corporate landmarks by SOM, Minoru Yamasaki, Gunnar Birkerts, and Philip Johnson/John Burgee. Symposium attendees walked the Minneapolis Skyways of the 1960s and explored the University of Minnesota’s expansive campuses. As a final treat, participants spent the weekend visiting Saint John’s Abbey & University, transformed by Marcel Breuer in 1953, and Eero Saarinen’s 1958 IBM facility in Rochester, Minnesota. As participants discovered, the Midwest is full of Modern marvels!
