In late June a construction crew began gutting the interior of Paul Rudolph’s embattled Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY. Two recent lawsuits, filed by local attorney Michael Sussman on behalf of Orange County residents, to halt the demolition were dismissed. A third suit has been filed on the grounds that the County Legislature failed to follow environmental procedures. Meanwhile, the $7 million demolition portion of the project, which includes removing about one-third of the Rudolph building and most interiors, is proceeding and is expected to be complete in two to three months.... Since it began three years ago, the Maplewood Post Office redevelopment project has come under scrutiny from numerous local citizen groups in Maplewood, NJ. In March, DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State wrote a letter to the NJ Historic Preservation Office noting the contributions that well-designed public buildings from the Modern vernacular tradition make to the historical record and to their communities and adding DOCOMOMO’s support for the designation and reuse of the Maplewood Post Office in particular. ... At its July 2015 meeting the New Jersey State Review Board for Historic Sites approved two Modern structures for listing on the state’s Register of Historic Places. The Tofani-DiMuzio House, located on Absecon Island in Atlantic County, was designed by Philadelphia-based architect Arthur Tofani, Jr for his uncle. Completed in 1951, the home retains many of its original details, including custom-designed wood cabinetry and furniture.. The other Modern listing is Eero Saarinen's very worthy Bell Laboratories in Holmdel. Its listing represents an important milestone for preservation advocates. ... MORE

“Keeping it Modern” is an initiative of the Getty Foundation launched in 2014 to address what the Foundation recognizes as the significant challenges faced in preserving Modern architectural legacy. There were 14 grant award winners in 2015, five of them in the US, including St. John’s Abbey and University Center in Collegeville, MN, one of the sites featured at this year’s DOCOMOMO US National Symposium in June. ...
