The Architect of Light: Happy Hour & Tour of Louis Kahn's Final Masterpiece

A tour of the presidential memorial led by Robert Balder, the Executive Director of Cornell's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, and Stephen Martin, the Conservancy’s former Director of Design and Planning, detailing the design philosophy of Kahn and the changing landscape of Roosevelt Island and New York City. This event is part of AIANY Archtober, New York City’s architecture and design month. More

Take a road trip with architectural journalist Sam Lubell who will share his insights into celebrated and lesser known Modern architecture destinations in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut described in his book "Mid-Century Modern Architecture Travel Guide: East Coast USA," recently published by Phaidon. More



Kaneji Domoto in Usonia

The community of Usonia in Pleasantville, NY, 35 miles north of New York City, is the only fully realized example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for an exurban United States and an example of what it meant to design, and live, within Wright’s millieu. Wright designed the site plan and served on the building committee, defining the architectural style. He eventually designed three of the cooperative’s 47 homes. Five of the remaining houses were designed by Kaneji Domoto, who used the houses to translate Wright’s idiom to low-cost construction. More



Louis Kahn's Modernism & the Architecture of Memorialization

This tour organized by Four Freedoms Park Conservancy and DOCOMOMO US, will explore the design philosophy and work of modernist architect Louis Kahn, his posthumously completed design for the memorial, and issues surrounding public memorialization. Beyond the Glass House: New Canaan Mid-Century Modern Houses 1947–1979

Join guest editor and architect Alan Goldberg and photographer Michael Biondo for a conversation with writer Gwen North Reiss about the New Canaan houses featured in a+u – Architecture & Urbanism, a magazine in Japanese and English that provides information on architecture around the globe to a global audience. The discussion will center on a recent issue that examined fourteen Mid-Century Modern houses in New Canaan, CT, designed by nine architects between the years 1947-1979. More
