New Canaan Modern House Day Tour + Symposium
October 5, 2013
The New Canaan Historical Society has an exciting day planned as part of its “Modern House Day Tour + Symposium” series. This year’s event, titled “A Modern Mix: Art + Architecture,” highlights art in Modern homes. Following a morning symposium, guests will venture out for guided tours of homes designed by Ulrich Franzen, Gates and Ford, Alan Goldberg, Landis Gores, John Johansen, Bimel Kehm, Hugh Smallen and Edward Durell Stone.
“Modern House Day” begins with a continental breakfast and symposium at New Canaan Country School. The campus features three buildings designed by local Modern architect Gary Lindstrom as well as the middle school and science buildings by Landis Gores. Symposium speakers include: Michael Biondo, photographer; Robert Gregson, photographer; and Mary Thorp, founder of The Harry Bertoia Research Project. The program will be moderated by John Arbuckle, DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State board president and co-chairman of the AIA New York Chapter Historic Buildings Committee.
Following the symposium and lunch on the New Canaan Country School campus, guests will be transported via private vans, escorted by an architect or historian of the Modern Movement to each of the homes on the tour. The day will close with an evening cocktail reception at the New Canaan Historical Society.
New Canaan, CT, is widely known for its concentration of houses designed from the late 1940s to the early 1970s by some of the nation’s most notable Modern architects. The New Canaan Historical Society is at the forefront of efforts to preserve this legacy. In addition to its tours, the Society maintains an important collection of archival material about the Modernist movement in New Canaan in its library and operates and maintains the Gores Pavilion (1959) in Irwin Park. The NCHS was also a lead sponsor of the groundbreaking Modern Homes Survey, which identified and documented 91 mid-century Modern houses in New Canaan.
“Modern House Day Tour + Symposium 2013” is generously sponsored by William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty. All event proceeds benefit the New Canaan Historical Society preservation program.
