Michael Biondo’s New Canaan photographs on view at the Gores Pavilion

May 1, 2015
through October 31, 2015

Get an updated perspective on New Canaan Modernism. Photographs by Michael Biondo for the book Midcentury Houses Today can be seen in an exhibition at the Gores Pavilion. The book documents how New Canaan Modern houses have evolved to meet changing circumstances in the decades since their construction.

As a member of the book's four-member team of authors, Biondo photographed 16 historically significant residences, including well-known works by Marcel Breuer, Philip Johnson, John Johansen and Eliot Noyes. The houses were photographed just as currently inhabited: no "staging," with furnishings altered for the occasion. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Biondo began his career with celebrity portraits for Interview magazine, then spent several years as a fashion photographer in Paris before settling on architecture as his principal subject.

The Gores Pavilion provides a more than suitable venue for this exhibition as it has a successful evolution story of its own. Designed in 1959 as a combination lodge and pool house for a family estate by Landis Gores—Phillip Johnson’s associate on the Glass House and one the Harvard Five—the structure has been restored and adapted as a gathering and gallery venue operated by the New Canaan Historical Society, its surrounding acreage acquired by the town as a park.
