Midtown Modernism(s): East 42nd Street, the United Nations and Vicinity

July 25, 2015

It’s no secret (to DOCOMOMO followers, at least) that Midtown Manhattan is a trove of noteworthy Modern architecture. This AIA NY walking tour, led by DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-state board member Kyle Johnson, covers many of the distinctive buildings and interiors that define the area, starting with Art Deco stand outs and moving to well-known sites such as the UN Headquarters and Kevin Roche’s Ford Foundation building. This densely packed tour of Midtown’s multiple modernisms is rounded out by lesser-known structures such as the Japan Society and William Lescaze’s 1934 home and office, along with buildings by Harrison & Abramovitz, Gwathmey Siegel, and I. M. Pei.
