50th Anniversary of Empire State Plaza

September 23, 2015

Fifty years ago the cornerstone was laid for Albany’s Empire State Plaza, a monumentally-scaled ensemble of government and culture buildings, the design of which borrowed heavily from Brasilia, Versailles, Chandigarh and more. Largely the vision of then Governor Nelson Rockefeller, executed by architect Wallace Harrison, the Plaza was, and to some extent still is, a polarizing urban renewal project (see more on the Plaza's legacy HERE). The State of New York is commemorating the Plaza's groundbreaking with a series of events in Albany that offer the opportunity to learn about the site’s history and reflect on its legacy. FYI, The lecture and panel discussion take place in The EGG.
