Midtown Modernism(s): Park Avenue Corridor
August 29, 2015
It’s no secret (to the DOCOMOMO crowd, at least) that Midtown Manhattan is a trove of noteworthy Modern architecture. This AIA NY walking tour, led by DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-state board member Kyle Johnson, covers many of the distinctive buildings and interiors that define the area, starting with Art Deco stand outs and moving to well-known sites such as the Lever House and the Seagram Building. This densely packed tour of Midtown’s multiple modernisms is rounded out by “vernacular” Modern office buildings by Emery Roth and others and a sampling of late Modern and Postmodern designs by Edward Larrabee Barnes, Philip Johnson, and I. M. Pei.
