DOCOMOMO NY/TRIModern Conversations
Nina Rappaport: The Modernist Vertical Urban Factory
April 12, 2016
For Modern architects, the factory was the epitome of the avant-garde. Numerous European architects, including Le Corbusier and Eric Mendelsohn, looked to America’s vernacular structures of the early 20th century for inspiration. For DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State’s next Modern Conversation, Nina Rappaport, author of Vertical Urban Factory (2016, Actar), will discuss how Modernism influenced factory design and vice versa. Her talk will also touch on the relationship of the factory to the city, both as individual mechanized buildings and as integrated into factory towns and districts, and the post-WWII demise of the urban factory. Nina is vice president of the Board of DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State.
