The Met Breuer: Burnishing a Modern Masterpiece

May 4, 2016

Marcel Breuer was at the height of his career when he designed the Whitney Museum in 1966. He was the recognized master of using what he called “close to Earth materials,” particularly stone and concrete. The beauty and integrity of the building’s design, materials, and execution make it one of the most distinguished examples of mid-century modern architecture in New York.

At this presentation and panel discussion, project team members from Beyer Blinder Belle, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Cultural Heritage Conservation will discuss the immersive task of restoring the building—including extensive research and an understanding of Breuer’s approach to design and materials—and transforming it into The Met Breuer, a space for presenting exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.

This event is organized jointly by three committees of AIANY—Tour, Cultural Facilities and Historic Buildings—with DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State serving as media sponsor.
