Twentieth Century Bronx
August 10, 2016
Explore the Bronx Civic Center with the Historic Districts Council. The neighborhood features a range of 20th-century architectural gems, including the Art Deco Bronx County Building, the Grand Concourse Historic District, and two urban renewal-era housing developments. Afterwards architect Françoise Bollack will lead a walk-through of the mid-century Executive Towers, the Grand Concourse’s most recent landmark designation. Bollack is currently leading the restoration of the building’s lobby. Designed between 1959 and 1963 by the prolific but under-the-radar architect Philip Birnbaum, who built over 300 apartment buildings in New York City and had a reputation for making extremely space-efficient units, the Towers were once described as “the first luxury skyscraper in the Bronx.” Highlights include the saw-tooth canopy at an entrance finished in gold-toned mosaic tile with blue tile fleur-de-lis, Paul Manship-inspired statuary, and expansive views of the area, which participants can enjoy while visiting a high-floor apartment at the end of the tour.
