The Neutra VDL Research Compound

March 2, 2010

The HP: InQuiry Lecture Series, organized by students of the Historic Preservation Program at Columbia University, is featuring a lecture by Dr. Raymond Neutra, son of Richard Neutra (1892–1970). Raymond will speak about the Neutra VDL Compound in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. Built on a small 60x70 foot lot in three phases—1932, 1940 and 1966—it was capable of housing the Neutra office and three separate families in a tranquil environment with patios, pools, and rooftop and balcony gardens where nature penetrated the urban dwelling spaces. A cooling rooftop reflection pool, large overhangs and movable sun louvers were innovative climate-sensitive design features, the design of which was informed by Neutra's interest in neurosciences. A fundraising campaign to cover needed repairs and on-going maintenance of the site is currently underway.
