The Architecture & Design Film Festival: New York 2017

November 1, 2017

Under the smart tagline DESIGN DIRECTS EVERYTHING, the Architecture & Design Film Festival returns for another exciting Fall run. This year’s lineup features three films of special interest to the Modern enthusiast. And to make sure you don’t miss these new works on Ledner, Roche, Mies—and more—DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State has arranged for members to receive discounted advance purchase tickets for the entire festival. When purchasing tickets online, enter the promotional code DCMM to obtain the discount. The festival runs November 1–5 at the Cinépolis Chelsea.

DOCOMOMO NY/Tri-State is co-presenting two screenings of “Designing Life: The Modernist Architecture of Albert C. Ledner.” This documentary is an in-depth exploration of an influential New Orleans architect whose buildings for the National Maritime Union in the 1960s are now iconic figures in the NYC landscape. Director Catherine Ledner and Roy Beeson will be present for Q&A after the screenings. If you missed the New York premiere at the Center for Architecture earlier this month, this is your chance to catch it.

Another ADFF highlight with a Modern bent is the U.S. premiere of “Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect,” a new documentary out of Ireland about the Pritzker Prize-winning Irish-American architect Kevin Roche who still practices at age 95. With a lifetime of acclaimed work behind him including the Ford Foundation, Oakland Museum of California and 40 years designing galleries for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Roche eschews celebrity and has no intention of retiring.

The third noteworthy Modern-themed entry is the New York premiere of “Neue Nationalgalerie” a film about the epoch-defining Berlin structure designed by Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1968 shortly after his death. Director Ina Weisse, whose father Rolf Weisse worked in the Chicago office of Mies van der Rohe, examines how the Neue Nationalgalerie came to be and the worldview it sought to express.
