The Glass House: The Summer Party
June 8, 2019
The Glass House Summer Party returns to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the history-making house Philip Johnson (1906–2005) designed for himself in the Connecticut woods in 1949. The event encompasses performance, exhibition, gallery visits, an auction, gourmet picnic, and more—all to benefit restoration of Johnson’s numerous buildings on the site and the Glass House’s programming to raise awareness of Modern architecture and art. Unique to this year’s party, the French high-wire artist Philippe Petit will do a site-specific aerial walk (Yes. Philippe Petit of Twin Towers wire walk fame). In addition to the permanent galleries guests can view the newest on-site exhibition, “Gay Gatherings: Philip Johnson, David Whitney and the Modern Arts.” Those interested in preservation can experience through virtual reality a simulation of the restored interior of the Brick House (currently closed pending restoration). The silent auction, via Paddle 8, is now live and open online to all.
