Join Beth Sholom Synagogue to celebrate its 67th anniversary, with a special lecture by David Brownlee, titled ‘An Engineer Is Only Undeveloped Architect,’ Frank Lloyd Wright and Modern Technology.’ Brownlee, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania and a historian of modern architecture , will explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s exhilarating relationship with the machine. Although he worshipped nature, Wright also loved modern technology. He owned 85 cars in his lifetime, and his architecture made daring use of concrete, glass, and steel. Examples of this boldness include the cantilevered balconies of Fallingwater, the mushroom-shaped columns of the Johnson Wax building, and the corrugated glass roof of Beth Sholom. Of course, this daring was risky; the balconies of Fallingwater have sagged and had to be reinforced, and Beth Sholom’s roof is famously leaky. Fortunately, a comprehensive solution to the leaking has been designed, and Brownlee will preview the repair project that will begin in the coming year.
