Biography and Building: Film-Makers on Lives of Architects

February 5, 2026

“Biography and Building: Film-Makers on Lives of Architects” is an in person and livestreamed conversation hosted by the Yale School of Architecture featuring Nathaniel Kahn, Yael Melamede, Anita Naughton, Jim Venturi, and Denise Zmekhol—all makers whose work explores architecture not just as buildings, but as lived stories and cultural practice.

This program centers on the intersection of biography and architectural filmmaking, bringing together documentary filmmakers and scholars to reflect on how cinematic and narrative approaches capture the creative lives, philosophies, and legacies of architects. Participants are likely to discuss their approaches to portraying architectural practice on film, the challenges of conveying design thinking through moving images, and the role of storytelling in shaping public understanding of architecture and its makers.

Attendees can expect insights into how architectural biographies are crafted in film and video, the ethical and aesthetic decisions involved in documenting architectural work, and how these media contribute to architectural history and criticism beyond conventional lectures or publications.
