Curator-Led Tour: Gerrit Rietveld: Wealth of Sobriety with Barry Bergdoll

July 22, 2026

Join DOCOMOMO US/New York Tri-State for a special curator-led tour of Gerrit Rietveld: Wealth of Sobriety, a current exhibition at the Center for Architecture, led by exhibition co-curator Barry Bergdoll. One of the most influential architects and designers of the twentieth century, Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) helped define modern architecture through his innovative furniture, houses, and collaborations with the Dutch De Stijl movement.

In 2018 Dutch photographer Arjan Bronkhorst published the photographic volume Wealth of Sobriety based on a several-years-long project of photographing lesser-known houses designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld. This exhibition examines Rietveld’s groundbreaking work through a selection of the projects published in the book.

Barry Bergdoll, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and former Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, will provide exclusive insights into the exhibition’s themes, images, and curatorial approach.
