Postwar Park Avenue: Modernism and the Market

June 16, 2026

Presented by The Skyscraper Museum, this program explores the rise of International Style office buildings along Park Avenue after World War II through a brief history presented by architectural historian Carol Willis. Dan Shannon, managing partner of MdeAs Architects, will then discuss the challenges facing aging postwar glass-box towers and how owners are modernizing curtain walls, lobbies, and mechanical systems to keep these landmark buildings competitive in today’s market. Over the past 35 years, MdeAS has rejuvenated a large portfolio of postwar buildings on the Park Avenue corridor, including 90 Park Avenue, 100 Park Avenue, 200 Park Avenue, 237 Park Avenue, and 430 Park Avenue. Shannon will discuss the economic influence on the tower as a typology, as well as how some emerging modernists held to traditional elements while others became fully modern.

This in-person program in the gallery at the Skyscraper Museum will also be live streamed on the Skyscraper Museum YouTube Channel.
